The roofs are now in place on the buildings that form the first phase of this massive project to transform learning facilities in Estover. The buildings would be ready before the start of the summer holidays.
The lifelong learning campus is the second to be built in the city and is one of the biggest investments ever made in the city for children and young people. Once complete, it will be home to Estover Community College as well as Estover Primary School, Plymbridge Children’s Centre and Nursery School, the Soundhouse, Estover Library, Estover Youth Centre, part of Plymouth Hospital School and Downham School. All the organizations were involved in shaping the complex which has been designed by award-winning architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, part of the design team for contractors Kier Western.
Features include flexible space to allow classrooms to change size and shape, breakout areas, an amphitheatre for hosting outdoor performances, dedicated wings for subjects such as design and arts and information technology, and open plan internal and external dining spaces alongside mezzanine areas. An inner courtyard area will act as the heart of the campus and a central link to all the facilities.
Leisure and sports facilities for the community includes a floodlit astroturf pitch, football and rugby pitches, a new running track and cricket square, four-court sports hall and three new games areas.
