The Festival Village is the new arts hub, which is the result of a transformation of a disused space under the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre. Designed for artists from across the world, the Festival Village is constructed upon 950 square metre of disused space, which includes cafe, bar and exhibition space.
Engaging nearly 200 volunteers from all backgrounds, including architecture, design and construction in the comake and codesign process, LYN atelier and TILT have used five tonnes of recycled materials. Construction took four months to complete and out of those five tons of recycled materials, two tons were salvaged from the existing Festival Village site.
Using upcycled, recycled and repurposed materials, the Festival Village features chairs made from wheelbarrows and under light fittings made from kitchen utensils and bottles. The final look and feel of the Festival village is borne out of the participatory process, which provides an innovative, and inspiring aesthetic to the artists as well as to the visitors.
Situated at the heart of the Festival of the World, the Festival Village has been created to provide an inspiring and relaxing space for artists across the world, where world-renowned international artists to local volunteers would feel at home. The Festival Village forms part of Southbank Centre’s ‘Festival of the World’ with MasterCard, a summer long festival including inspirational arts projects from the UK and around the world.
