The project is being managed in a “phased” approach necessitated by the age of the building.
A nursing unit at the hospital’s second-floor will undergo major renovation in the first phase with an estimated cost of about $22 million. In addition, the hospital’s main entrance will be relocated from Black River Road to Memorial Lane. The first floor mall area of the hospital will be reoriented to provide a new traffic flow pattern that in turn, will improve patient access and convenience for outpatient services.
In the first phase of the project, the building will be re-roofed, while heating and cooling systems will be replaced. The exterior of the hospital will be re-skinned with a new exterior surface. By resurfacing the outside of the building, a new architecturally pleasing exterior design theme would be created.
After the completion of phase I of the project, the GHS Board of Trustees will consider phase II. As per reports, Phase II could include a new patient tower with beds and operating rooms.
