Barr Gazetas’ was briefed to transform an entire London city block, under the same ownership, by delivering best-in-class office space on the upper floors, retail and restaurant uses on the ground floor and basement, whilst retaining the rich heritage of the buildings.

It did so with great design complexity, including combining five historic buildings, each built separately at different times, with the resulting scheme drawing heavily on the buildings’ industrial former uses as well as sensitively restores many of the original features that date from this time.

The desire to retain the separate identities of the existing buildings, while combining the interior plans to form a single, flexible, open-plan office space internally, was an innovative and inherently challenging approach. The project not only successfully unifies these five rich buildings but puts people and their wellbeing at its heart.

The judges said:Considered and contemporary design that provides a clean and comfortable work environment with industrial touches.’
