The public spaces of the 212m-tall landmark office building will receive makeover, marking the first update of the tower’s lobby and other interior spaces. The building’s pinkish hue of the granite exterior will be unchanged.
New wood panelling and seating areas will be added in the massive one-block long main lobby. The renovated lobby will feature a lighter and brighter environment with new lighting elements and wall finishes. A new main level coffee shop, a CVS pharmacy and MinuteClinic, and renovated elevators and training rooms are some other improvements. The auditorium will be refurbished in 2011. The building now features a new restaurant called TASTE!. An outdoor seating area will be opened in early 2011 with views over Woodruff Park.
The tower is the world headquarters of Georgia-Pacific, an American pulp and paper company. Other tenants include consulting firm McKinsey & Company, Bank of Tokyo, Montag & Associates, the British Consulate and the downtown branch of the High Museum of Art.
The tower is on the former site of the Loew’s Grand Theatre, where the premiere for the 1939 film Gone with the Wind was held. Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) was the architect behind the tower.
