Spread over 172,000 square feet, the four-storey, J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons will be the first education commons building on campus at GRU, which will reflect the future of medicine. Serving dentistry, medical and nursing students, the new facility will provide much needed space for the growing Georgia University.
Envisioned as a facility to provide relief to the growing campus and increase class sizes from 190 to 240 in the next seven years, the medical facility upon completion, will include two 300-seat auditoriums, two 150-seat classrooms, 13 small group classrooms, and a 42,000 square feet, state-of-the-art simulation centre.
To connect to other facilities and cities, all the classrooms in the Education Commons building will feature “video capture” and broadcast capability. The high-tech building will also feature responsive mannequins in its simulation centre, which will help students gain the hands-on and real-life experience in the medical field.
New York-based Skanska USA Building Inc. is serving as the main contractor. The project is slated for completion by 30 June 2014 and the university will move in by mid-August, in time for the fall 2014 semester.
