Contributed equally by the governments of Quebec and Canada and carried out in partnership with the municipality of La Doré, a Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean community of some 1,500 inhabitants, the project will involve various renovations and upgrades to the sports facility, including the installation of a refrigeration system that will help double the operating time of the rink and improve the quality of the ice. The building’s 40-year-old roof will also be replaced, as will the lighting system, to ensure better energy efficiency. Additional work will be carried out to bring the facility into compliance with current fire safety standards.
The governments of Canada and Quebec signed an agreement to accelerate the execution of recreational infrastructure projects in Quebec up to March 31, 2011. To that end, the Government of Canada will invest $76 million and the Government of Quebec at least that amount in recreational infrastructure projects carried out in cost-sharing partnership with municipal administrations or local organizations.
The Fonds pour le développement du sport et de l’activité physique was created by the Government of Quebec to ensure all of the province’s regions access to new and improved sports facilities in order to promote healthier lifestyles among their populations.
