The new lobby design complements the original Thai-style fresco murals adorning the ceiling, lending a modern and residential feel to the space. The makeover has incorporated a combination of vivid blues and subdued greys to bring out the colours of the original silk paintings that adorn the walls and ceilings. A new bar, new soft furnishings, and a palate of vibrant colours complement the existing traditional Thai ceiling paintings and murals. Fabrics by Jim Thompson adorn the soft furnishings, with the space featuring flower displays.
The new lobby bar is inspired by traditional Thai furniture designs. Featuring a contemporary look, the space is adorned with antique silver finishing complementing cool marble and back-lit glass.
The original lobby was designed collaboratively by some of Thailand’s most celebrated artists chosen to assist in the creation of a new art form, a Thai-style ceiling fresco in watercolour and raw silk. Architect Khun Dan Wongprasat conceived a unique and visually splendid coup de resistance for the high-ceilinged lobby with each ceiling of the main and mezzanine floors decorated with hand-painted silk mandalas including Buddhist symbols, traditional Thai mythological and astrological animals, highly-stylised sunbursts, and other elements of nature.
The theme of the grand staircase mural is ‘The Coronation of a King’, referring to the rise of the Chakri Dynasty to the throne of Thailand. The mural features four prominent devices: the elephant signifying war; the horse signifying commerce; the chariot representing royalty; and the boat signifying trade.
The new Lobby design complements these murals beautifully, while adding a fresher, contemporary, more residential feel to the space.
