The key elements of the project include facelift of the hospital’s main patient building and creation of a heart and vascular centre. The heart and vascular centre alone is estimated to have a budget of $60 million. It will incorporate three catheterization labs as well as a mixed-use room to facilitate procedures such as invasive surgery and endovascular operations.
The facility will also conduct a $44 million makeover of its East Tower which was originally constructed in 1974. The tower consists of 164 beds and encompasses five floors as reported by the San Diego Union Tribune.
The hospital will be equipped with improved plumbing and lighting fixtures and lifts, as well as new medical equipment following the overhaul. There will also be creation of a central energy plant worth $51 million which spans 18,000 square feet. In addition, the facility will incorporate new boilers, a steam generator and a pair of emergency generators.
The entire project will be financed through a bond approved by the district voters in 2006. Work is slated to commence by early 2012 and be finished by 2014.
