Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center will join other research centres as part of the Durham Research Plaza. It will combine both cancer treatment and research to provide the highest level of cancer care, with the goal of earning the “Comprehensive Cancer Center” designation from the National Cancer Institute in the US.
The project consists of three components: a 10-storey, 252,000-square-foot, cancer research tower with 98 laboratories, named for donors and local philanthropists Suzanne and Walter Scott; a seven-storey, 325,000-square-foot, 108-bed hospital tower, named for donor CL Werner; and a multidisciplinary ambulatory clinic.
The centre would be unique in a sense that it will bring both research and clinical space focused on cancer patient care under one roof, and is designed to encourage collaboration. The building is also expected to be a true embodiment of the translational medicine concept, as per HDR.
The new cancer centre is named for Fred and Pamela Buffett, Omaha natives, who donated for the project. Construction is expected to be complete in 2016.
HDR also designed Durham Research Centers I & II, and the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education (CHSE) at UNMC campus earlier.
