The new £9 million ($14.46 million) UTC will be built on a sensitive site, overlooking the Daventry town centre conservation area. It will have an area of 5,432 square metre, and will accommodate workshops, laboratories, design studios, and more conventional learning spaces.
The college will be built across two blocks, which will be linked by means of a serrated roof of the entrance and a learning resource centre. The design of the college will be noted for its steep gradient, which will be sympathetic to its surrounding.
The new UTC will also incorporate various sustainable elements, which consist of 105 square metre of photovoltaic panels, sedum roof and rainwater harvesting system.
The college will accommodate up to 600 students in the age group of 14 to 19 years. The new UTC is scheduled to open in September 2013. It will offer education in sustainable and related new technologies, alongside technical education, core curriculum and breadth of experiences.
The scheme is being funded by the UK Government, in association with Daventry District Council, Northamptonshire County Council and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation. The UTC is being sponsored by Moulton College and the University of Northampton.
