The project involved development of a new 40-bed, three-storey hospital that spans 113,300 square feet and three-storey, 69,000 square feet MOB. The hospital has been designed by US-based Gresham Smith and Partners, along with New Orleans-based Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects; while Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects and Duplantier & Meric Architects LLC designed the MOB.
The scheme has been developed on an 11.5-acre site, located at 8000 W. Judge Perez Dr. in the St. Bernard Parish seat of Chalmette. The new $91 million hospital includes a 10-bed ED and Intensive Care Unit, as well as other healthcare services, such as general medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, urology, endoscopy, radiation therapy, physical therapy, skilled nursing and a pharmacy.
All 40 beds in the hospital are private rooms. The hospital has also been designed to expand up to 58 beds in semi-private rooms, without any additional construction. The MOB accommodates physician suites, outpatient rehabilitation and administrative offices.
The two buildings have been developed using special engineering and design techniques, such as earthquake resistant structure, which will enable them to withstand natural disasters. The two buildings will also be designed to sustain extreme wind and water conditions, including hurricane-force winds of up to 180 miles per hour.
The new hospital has two generators, diesel fuel tanks and operating systems, placed on the second floor of the facility, 25 feet above ground, which will enable it to prevent flooding issues.
