The lighting fixture is created completely from beeswax and wick. The design of the lamp takes an innovative eco-friendly approach by stressing on the life span of a product in relation to the ecosystem instead of its carbon footprint. The use of wax helps the lamp disseminate a soft light as well as a delicate scent if turned on.
The lamp consists of a block of bees wax comprising an empty space. An energy-efficient LED bulb is fitted in this space which stands in stark contrast with the roughness of the wax block. The LED lamp generates less heat compared to traditional bulbs and so, is considered convenient for the wax-based luminaire.
The base of the lamp is tied with cast-in wicks which lift it from its surface and along with some small holes help flow of air across the entire luminaire. The light fitting can be turned upside down to release the wicks after the completion of the lamp’s life span.
The competition has been organised by architectural lighting company Electrolight as part of State of Design Festival in Melbourne held in July 2011.
