The new bed design project is distinct for blending cutting-edge design with traditional furniture-making methods. The team has already launched a special bed with a headboard. They are planning to introduce a limited-edition collection.
Zuzunaga is renowned for creating bright, multi-colored and pixilated textile prints in a checked pattern. His work is mainly based on square and rectangular shapes and revolves around abstraction and essence. The partnership was formed partly due to the similarity of Hastens’ blue and white checked upholstery.
Hastens and Zuzunaga teamed up with Wallpaper Magazine to create the Pixel Bed for the forthcoming Handmade issue, due to be published in July 2010. The project entails products created entirely for the design magazine.
Founded in 1852, Hastens is considered as the oldest Swedish manufacturer of beds and mattresses. Hastens makes each of its beds by hand and uses all-natural filling materials – primarily horsehair in addition to flax, cotton and wool – instead of foam rubber and latex.
