says Rebecca Joseph if only… of Scott Brownrigg

In the 13th century the site of Covent Garden was the large kitchen garden of the Abbey and Convent of St Peter of Westminster. With no green spaces left in or around Covent Garden for people to rest from shopping, meet up with friends and have picnics in the summer or exercise, wouldn’t it be wonderful to bring this environment back?

I would create a lawn space above the current market, vegetable and fruit stalls could sell local produce, grown in glass houses here. I would incorporate light wells which could simulate pools of water. Sculptural works by local artists, perhaps including oversized fun garden elements, could be showcased and have a functional use – large steel dandelions could provide sheltering and copper conkers could be fun seating.

For exercise, a conveyor-belt cycle path could be created, powered by the pedalling of static bikes, and which would provide exercisers with a fantastic 360-degree view of Covent Garden below.
