The new tower has been designed by HOK International. The design of the new facility will be in tune with the history and regional features of India. It will measure 102 metres in height and is slated to be the country’s tallest and the seventh tallest ATC tower across the globe following its completion. The tower will be located adjacent to the existing 60-metre tall control tower.

The new ATC tower will incorporate 21 controller positions offering 360 degree views of the visual control room. It will also comprise 12 ground controller positions at operational level. The tower will be equipped with Tuned Mass Damper technology. The technology will function as a shock absorber, thereby enhancing the occupants’ comfort level as well as cutting down building sway, as reported in the Deccan Herald.

The tower is expected to maximise use of the three runways and raise the amount of hourly air traffic movement from the present rate of 65. The new facility is expected to operate fully from mid-2014.
