The project is aimed at restoring the 1930s built Art Deco style, Kings Hill Control Tower near Maidstone to its former glory. The tower which serves as a local landmark now, played a key role in RAF operations during World War II.
Nestled between a mixed-use, sustainable development, the two-storey tower will be renovated to accommodate a flexible multi-use space for cultural and community uses; a Costa coffee shop; and office space in the upper levels.
Pursuant to the contract, ISG will completely strip-out and retrofit the building, and will restore it to its original condition. Key aspects of the project includes refurbishment of all windows and balustrades, repairs to the masonry and concrete façade and removal of exterior finishes, and re-painting it to its original white colour. ISG will also be responsible for installation of new mechanical and electrical services.
The company will also construct two single-storey extensions, which will be flanked on the either side of the control tower. Each extension will have a footprint of approximately 70 square metre. One of these extensions, along with the entire ground floor of the original building, will house coffee shop; while the other extension will serve as a show and exhibition space with a separate area for memorabilia and artworks commemorating the former airfield.
