Located at the Fontana Medical Center on 9961 Sierra Avenue, the new hospital combines cutting-edge technology and a peaceful, patient-centered healing environment. Said to be the second largest in San Bernardino County, the new hospital has occupied a building that had been used for administration during the steel plant’s construction, which was completed in 1942.
The new 490,000 square feet hospital is a seven storey, 314-bed facility, which will offer more than 20 specialty services, including a Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Labor and Delivery, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Each Labor and Delivery room features a crib for the baby, which helps to monitor their heart and temperature without leaving the mother.
Designed by taking care of the needs of the patients and their families, the new facility features private patient rooms with plenty of space for family and visitors, a 24-hour Emergency Department fully equipped with 51 private rooms, a 24-hour pharmacy, a café with outside patio setting, a healing garden and meditation room, energy-efficient electrical, air, and plumbing systems, and free Wi-Fi service throughout the facility.
In the near future, the hospital will include an Intuitive Surgical Da Vinci robot, which has superior 3D vision. It will allow for unparalleled precision, visualisation, dexterity and control for a precise surgery. With a price tag of more than $1 million, the robot is expected to revolutionise surgery in the local area.
According to the plan, three wings of the existing hospital will be demolished by 2016. Three additional areas will be demolished by 2020. The space created by the demolition will be converted to parking. Additional areas of the existing hospital will be preserved for potential future use.
Celebrating the 70th year of Kaiser Permanente, the new hospital will officially open its doors to the patients on 7 May 2013.
