Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh – major acute teaching hospital – is Scotland’s biggest maternity unit.
The new facility designed by Keppie, features curved walls and spacious delivery rooms. Each delivery rooms feature birthing pool and en-suite bathroom. The birthing center is designed to allow around 1,500 women a year to give birth in a homely environment. The design of the new midwife-led facility ensures increased privacy and dignity with medical expertise available around.
The new unit has been commissioned by NHS Lothian after a recent baby boom hit the region; births have jumped 11% over the three year period from 2004 to 9,456.
