Designed by UK-based architect Russ Palmer, the project involves development of new Almshouses at the site of former facility located in Culverland Road in Exeter. The new three-storey building will offer 24 two-bedroom units, which will double the capacity of the old almshouse.

The amenities for the residents include two escalators and a garden. The new residential units will be larger than the units it is replacing. Additionally, it will also answer the problems of sound and thermal insulation and access issues of the old facility.

Kier will incorporate several energy-efficient features in the project, which include air source heat pumps. The highly insulated project is likely to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 4. An attractive garden will also be planted with shrubs and flowers that will attract birds and butterflies.

Kier Living is currently undertaking the demolition work on the site, after which, the actual construction of the scheme is scheduled to begin. The project is being supported by Homes and Communities Agency, Exeter City Council and other philanthropic organisations.
