The pipeline scheme is being developed on a part of the former St Luke’s site on Falcon Road, Sowton. The school will serve as a new campus for the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education. The proposed building will be a purpose-built, two-storey facility. The rear side of the building will be a single-storey structure and will include a double height hall space.
The new school will have an area of 1,430 square metre and will incorporate general classrooms and a range of specialist curriculum areas; including IT, science, catering, construction and vehicle maintenance. It will also accommodate a separate workshop, multi-use games area, external social space and car parking.
The school will also have external hard play area, horticultural area and landscaped social areas with additional small social and curriculum external areas. The Central Devon Personalised Learning Service will also include a mechanical engineering workshop and a construction skills area.
The new school enjoys proximity to Digby and Sowton train station and is on the bus route, which is likely to encourage the use of public means of transport. The colour and materials used for the school will be in sync with other buildings in its proximity. It is scheduled to open in late 2012.
