It is the first convention centre in Tennessee to achieve LEED certification for its green initiatives.
The Convention Center has installed a 120-kilowatt rooftop solar photovoltaic system to provide clean, renewable energy to the region, which is a part of a comprehensive energy efficiency project.
The facility has also added new energy efficient boilers, a 30-ton air cooled chiller, window film, a new domestic hot water system, HVAC improvements including a variable air volume conversion, and water conservation systems.
The centre includes sustainable lighting schemes to reduce carbon footprint and make the building more sustainable.
The Knoxville Convention Center, managed by SMG, is located in downtown Knoxville adjacent to Sunsphere.
It has 500,000 square-feet concourse, meeting and exhibit space in addition to a kitchen and and catering facilities.
The building features a 27,300 square-foot divisible ballroom, 25 meeting rooms, three broad rooms and 460-seat Lecture Hall. It also includes underground loading dock with nine truck bays.
The Knoxville Convention Center has eight escalators located between each floor and four passenger elevators, as well as .stairs located throughout the building between each floor.
The building has separate accessibility for people with disabilities. All the meeting rooms, public restrooms, phone banks are accessible to them.
In the process of LEED Certification for Existing Buildings, the Knoxville Convention Center was scored in accordance with guidelines set forth by the US Green Building Council.
