Pursuant to the contract, the developer has delivered a new student accommodation scheme which has 98 units, consisting of 50 studio apartments, 48 cluster apartments and 318 study bedrooms. The studios, designed for double occupancy, are complete with a kitchen and bathroom.
The cluster apartments have between three and seven en-suite bedrooms and are complete with communal kitchens. The development also includes two, three-storey blocks that accommodate study bedrooms. The apartment blocks were constructed using traditional masonry structures. The buildings are clad in a combination of brick, render and cedar wood.
The scheme was designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating and includes a host of green features, which consist of sedum roofs on both buildings. Under the terms of the contract, the company has also built an energy centre which consists of gas boilers and a combined heat and power unit. The energy centre meets up to 20% of power requirements of the buildings, in addition to providing hot water and heating.
The design and build contract also included the realignment of the campus road to ensure minimal disruption to students and users of the campus leisure centre, which was kept open to the public throughout the construction period.
