Once the tallest building in Oklahoma, architect Joel Slaughter worked on the renovation program of Hotel Mayo, and restored a property that had been lying vacant for almost 30 years. The hotel recently had a soft opening and construction work is still on going at the site.
The renovation of the hotel cost an estimated $40 million, beginning 2008 when work began on converting seven upper floors into 76 loft apartments and renovating the 102 hotel rooms. The restored lower floors are now a popular venue for galas, proms, receptions, and meetings.
Workers are putting finishing touches to the terrazzo and marble floors along with repairing the facade of the hotel. The dining room exhibits an industrial décor featuring exposed air-ducts and a bar made out of salvaged metal from the hotel’s original water tank. The hotel suits and apartments feature dark wood cabinets, granite countertops, and panoramic views of the skyline.
The in-house restaurant, Trula, at Mayo Hotel, is not too upscale and displays the portrait of the socialite after whom it is named.
The hotel will organize an official opening in December 2009.
