Meijer renovated a vacant retail site to construct Niles Meijer. The new Meijer store measures 102,000 square feet, about half the size of most Meijer supercenters. The store is designed to be a grocery and pharmacy-focused, while still providing some general merchandise offerings.
Niles Meijer is the 12th Meijer store in suburban Chicago. Meijer also has plans to expand this new small format store concept in the Chicago area by building a second grocery-focused store in Orland Park, Illinois. The opening of the Orland Park Meijer is currently planned for late 2010.
Meijer operates in about 190 locations; about half of its stores are in Michigan, while the rest are in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.
