In a time of rapidly advancing technology, 3D printing has created a serious buzz in the media. 3D printers, once prohibitively expensive are now within the reach of more and more people, and have been used to create everything from prosthetic limbs to guns to houses.

The potential for 3D printing as an aid to architecture and design is obvious – but is it really worth investing in your own 3D printer?

That question will be addressed by Michele Pasca di Magliano, Associate at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) in a special event this Thursday (June 19th ) hosted by archiboo at the studio of Sto Werkstatt in London.

ZHA

Two years ago, ZHA set up its own 3D printing workshop and now has five 3D printers, producing 40 architectural models a month. Models are used for front-end design studies and presentations, as well as detailed study models and facade mock-ups.

Michele will explain how the ability to create physical objects from computer models has changed the way the practice works, and some of the practical issues involved with managing a 3D printing workshop within an architectural studio.

Hobs Studio, which supplies ZHA’s 3D printers, will bring a 3D printer to the talk and a ZHA model will be printed during the session. Director Michelle Greeff will also explain the different 3D printing technologies available.

Archiboo’s mission is to help architects become more creative in how they run and grow their practices. Breakfast talks are by developers, clients, designers journalists- anyone in fact who can inspire architects with new ideas and new ways of doing business.
