The History Shop was Wigan’s first public library designed by architect Alfred Waterhouse. The structure underwent extensive external and internal refurbishment at the hands of William Anelay and was opened to the public on April 9, 2010 as Museum of Wigan Life.
The GBP1.9 million ($2.9 million approx) refurbishment scheme transformed the grade II listed building into a hub for heritage services. Designed by UK-based multi disciplinary practice Bradshaw, Gass and Hope, the Museum of Wigan Life features new exhibition galleries, new research facilities for local and family history, and improved access to all areas of the building.
The museum is designed as a central point from which all areas of local heritage can be delivered across the borough. The scheme included external improvements, refurbishment of the first floor local and family study area and a new entrance ramp. The facility received mechanical and electrical revamp throughout, with sophisticated lighting systems and improved access. The building now features new workstations, reception, island counters, new flooring and decorations. The project secured GBP500,000 ($769,005 approx) from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Since the early 1990’s, the History Shop has been used to hold temporary displays, in-house exhibitions, and to provide a home for Wigan’s local history collection.
