The city-wide initiative created by Open House/Art in the Open and the London Development Agency launched its key Principles for light recently at London’s City Hall.

The Light London principles aim to create a shared understanding of light and its benefits to inspire better and more sustainable places.

They include using light to enhance the character of spaces; encouraging the use of public space through light and looking for ways of using light to respond to the activities of daily life. The ultimate goal is to think about light long term in London.

They have been developed in consultation with the Light London Working Group and are intended for use by public and private clients, architects, artists, curators, professional and lighting designers.

The Light London Principles will also be used to influence design for London projects according to the London Development Agency.

Munira Mirza, the Mayor of London’s Director of Policy, Arts, Culture and the Creative Industries, said: The Light London program opens up a window of opportunity for the capital’s artists to showcase their talent. There are immense creative possibilities in the use of light and we are encouraging artists, designers, planners and commissioners to use their imagination to complement London’s landscape.

Light London is a joint initiative designed to improve the lighting environment in the city.
