The state of the art facility for artist talks, film screenings, and other cultural events was the result of top-to-bottom renovations that transformed a former first-run movie house, the interiors and exterior of which were designed by Milton Glaser.
Glaser, the creator of the ‘I heart NY’ logo, designed the structure based on the monument of Tatlin’s Tower in Russia. The theater features three metal cylinders that sit atop the marquee and rotate at hourly intervals like an abstract timepiece.
A kinetic sculpture, designed by Glaser, is featured atop the theater’s marquee, which is surrounded by a zipper sign that has been integrated to display quotations about the passage of time by historic figures from Albert Einstein to Ronald Reagan.
The 20,000 square feet building includes two auditoriums, with seating capacity of 480 and 265 respectively. Latest lighting, sound and projection technologies are integrated within the theater.
