The aquarium that has been designed in resemblance to a cluster of pebbles is situated at the seaport of Batumi. The aquarium spans an area of over 2000 square meters.

The design comprises of four self-supporting exhibition areas or pebbles. The four stones represents marine biotypes of the Aegean sea, the Mediterranean sea, the Indian Ocean and the Black/Red seas. The four areas are connected to each other by means of a central, multipurpose space, which serves as home to a cafe and other retail functions. The educational intention of the aquarium is triangulated in a spatial arrangement into listening, experiencing and experimenting.

The aquarium is inspired directly from the pebbles of the Batumi Beach and is aimed at embodying an iconic rock formation visible from land and sea. Henning Larsen Architects won the project in an international competition in 2010 and the building is expected to commence construction in August 2011. The aquarium is slated to open in 2013.

The International Design Awards (IDA) exists to recognize, celebrate and promote legendary design visionaries and to uncover emerging talent in architecture and design.
