As part of the £430 million ($649.44 million) Southmead Hospital development scheme, the project is located on a site originally used as a workhouse, and retains several historic buildings.
The design of the project focuses on the main entrance of the centre along with a garden with a cherry tree opposite the main hospital square, which will be protected during the construction work.
Creating a new arrival space, the new build extension will link the existing building clusters. It provides highly serviced clinical rooms in a flexible and adaptable layout.
According to the design, the building will be split into two distinct areas to provide a separate waiting area and exits for patients. There is also a discreet exit which can be accessed directly from counselling rooms via a hidden garden where patients can spend time.
The project is said to be the first of its kind in the area, which will support people from across the region affected by any type of cancer. The cancer centre is scheduled to open in May 2014.
