The design of Ladywell Fields in Lewisham beat contestants such as Leicester Square and Granary Square at King’s Cross. This is the second year in a row BDP has won this award and the fourth time in the 10 years that the awards have been running.

The rejuvenation of Ladywell Fields for the London Borough of Lewisham, has transformed a previously under-used and featureless green space into a revitalised park, creating a new channel for the river Ravensbourne.

The design approach has transformed the park into a welcoming green oasis, and an attractive space for people to network and pause. The park features inviting entrances and an enhanced footpath network with new lighting and furniture. It has been designed in a manner to provide enjoyable, safe access and links that truly connect the local community to its parkland.

The park consists of three fields with a river running through them. The Northern Field of the park includes children’s playground, skate park, and tennis courts; Middle Field includes adventure playground, and water pumps; and the Southern Field includes a play area for young children.

The award was presented by the Mayor of London at a ceremony on 31 January at City Hall. Organised by London First in conjunction with the Mayor, the Royal Town Planning Institute and London Councils, the London Planning Awards celebrate the outstanding contribution of planners to the capital’s urban renaissance.
