The hotel is designed by David Kohn Architects in association with artist Fiona Banner. It will be placed atop the Queen Elizabeth Concert Hall on the banks of the River Thames during the 2012 Olympics. The boat design was selected from a total of 500 entries received from across the world in response to a competition announced by Living Architecture and Artangel in collaboration with the Southbank Centre. The design brief was to create a room on one of the most visible sites of Britain that could accommodate two people.

DKA’s design calls for a boat shaped room that will appear to have come to rest on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The inside of the boat will be fitted-out with real timber and will consist of several nooks and crannies that visitors will be urged to explore. The boat was designed after a literary theme and consists of a library with an eclectic collection to complement its theme.
