The Liege-Guillemins TGV Railway Station, which displays seamless interaction between the interior and the exterior without any facade in the traditional sense, was opened in September 2009.

Running in the sixth year, Travel + Leisure Design Awards recognize the year’s best examples of design and architecture in travel.

The station, designed to function as the link between two distinct areas of the city of Leige, was originally commissioned in 1996. Calatrava has been successful in replacing the existing station without interrupting train service.

The interaction between the interior and the exterior is seamless and the monumental vault appears as the façade. The station features vast glass roof encases and exposed working platforms. The transparency of the design is intended to complement dynamism of the moving ensemble of passengers and trains.

This is Calatrava’s second consecutive Travel + Leisure Design Award. In 2009, the architect was recognized in the ‘Best Bridge’ category for his Jerusalem Light Rail Bridge in Israel.
