Consisting of 9,000 square metres of space, the Calvijn Groene Hart provides education to 1,250 students at MAVO, HAVO and VWO level. The school forms a prominent entrance to a new green campus on the outskirts of the city.
With distinct architectural features, the educational building includes rounded corners and playful façade. Inside, it exhibits a joyful liveliness and warm atmosphere that forms the central part of the building.
The building has been created with spacious hallways, grand stairs and comfortable sitting areas. Creating a well-illuminated atmosphere, the central space of the school features staggered voids and beautiful daylight from above which is derived from three building wings, meeting in the middle.
In addition to the common features, the wings also house five teaching teams. Each team has its own department which consists of an open learning square surrounded by classrooms. This ‘living room’ provides the students with a home within the school.
Focusing on sustainability, the interior of the school is done in natural materials. Making the facility a truly contemporary school, the design has incorporated openable windows and ventilation based on the CO2 levels present in the air that makes for a healthy and pleasant environment to learn and live in.
The school has also received the BREEAM-NL Medior certificate from the Dutch Green Building Council. It opened its door to the pupils on 22 March 2013.
