Two products from PPG Industries – AQUAPON water-based epoxy and PITT-GUARD rapid-coat, direct-to-rust epoxy – have been specified by Kurt Amundsen, a senior associate at the architectural firm Populous, to protect the building. PPG is a Pennsylvania-based global supplier of protective and decorative coatings.

Aquapon epoxy is a fast-drying, low-volatile organic compound (VOC) coating with a hard, durable finish that resists exposure to corrosive solvents, acids, alkalis and slats. Pitt-Guard epoxy is engineered for barrier protection of steel, aluminium, hot-dipped galvanized steel and masonry surfaces. It has excellent wetting characteristics that enable application and good performance over tightly adhering rust and excellent performance over abrasive blasted surfaces.

The Consol Energy Center is the first National Hockey League (NHL) arena and among the first sporting venues in the world to attain LEED- Gold certification. It features green building elements from aluminium giant Alcoa and includes a curved glass curtain wall that takes advantage of daylighting.

The Consol Energy Center incorporates a mix of unique and upscale interior and exterior features. It was designed and constructed by Missouri-based architecture firm Populous, Pittsburgh-based Astorino architectural firm, a joint venture between construction managers PJ Dick and Hunt Construction and project management firm ICON.
