The new airport is being built on the site of country’s former Berlin Schoenefeld airport in the south-east of Berlin. The new airport will span a total area of 1,470 hectares and will have initial passenger handling capacity of 27 million passengers per annum. It will also have space for potential expansion to handle up to 45 million passengers per annum.
The design of the new airport hints of the traditional architecture of the region. The structured facades and clear geometric forms roots inspiration from the Prussian architect Schinkel as well as the Bauhaus style. The building will have a glass façade.
The airport is also noted for efficient layout and accessibility. It will be 220m long, 180m wide facility that will have a total area of 33,000 square metres. The terminal will be a six-storey building. The level four will have a viewing terrace, while level three will accommodate lounges. Departures and lounges for non-Schengen passengers are located on level two.
The level one will be departure terminal and arrival will be positioned in level zero. The two underground levels, level -1 will grant access to Airport City, while level -2 will have a railway station. The airport will have about 150 retail units, which will consist of 39 restaurants and 20 service providers.
The airport features two parallel runways, which are 1.9km apart. The terminal building is located between two runways, which enable the runways to operate separately. The terminal, gate positions and car parks are located compactly between the runways.
The airport will have a separate parking garage, consisting of four multi-storey car parks, three ground-level car parks and parking areas in the Car Rental Centre; which will together offer space for 10,000 vehicles. The airport will also have separate short-stay parking spaces on the terminal access road on the Departures as well as the Arrivals Level.
The airport is scheduled to open on 27 October 2013.
