The three halls along with Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, the Velodrome and the Tennis Centre, will form part of the Olympic Training Centre (OTC) after the completion of 2016 Games.

The sports halls will host basketball, taekwondo, Olympic and Paralympic judo, wrestling, wheelchair basketball, boccia, sitting volleyball, and wheelchair rugby.

The sports complex will also host important events of the international circuit for various sports.

The OTC will offer 40,000m2 of space for the training of 12 Olympic sports as well as a laboratory for research in the fields of nutrition, physiotherapy, sports and clinical medicine.

Aimed at elite athletes, the OTC will become one of Brazil’s first as well as South America’s most modern Olympic Training Centre.

Construction work began at the Barra Olympic Park in July 2012 with the dismantling of the old race track’s structure and the clearing of the site. The first stage construction included ground drilling and application of concrete on foundation structures to support the facilities.

The City Government in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Rio Mais Consortium will fund construction of the halls, the Main Press Centre (MPC), the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), a hotel, and the infrastructure at the Olympic Village, in addition to construction and maintenance of the park’s infrastructure for 15 years.

The sports halls and other permanent venues at the park will seek LEED certification.

Construction work on the three sports halls started on 1 July 2013.
