Over 90 designs from around the world – all of which were completed in the past 12 months – make up the exhibition, which spans seven design disciplines – architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphics, product and transport with each design having been chosen by a panel of distinguished nominators.
This is the sixth annual Designs of the Year competition and as usual the nominated designs are a fascinating and diverse mix which pits architecture such as Zaha Hadid’s Galaxy Soho building in Beijing alongside fashion including the costumes for the recent film adaptation of Anna Karenina and product design, which this year includes a non-stick Ketchup bottle.
As well as celebrate the diversity of design, the competition also pits the work of established designers against relative newcomers, and past winners such as Samuel Wilkinson, who won in 2011 with his design for a new energy saving light bulb, have proved that you don’t have to be a famous name in the design industry to come out on top.
This year, one of the youngest design practices in the running is Studio Swine, which FX chose as our One to Watch in January.
The exhibition featuring all the nominations will open 20 March 2013 with the winners from each category and one overall winner to be announced in April. Design Studio BarberOsgerby took the award last year for its London 2012 Olympic Torch.
