The new regional hospital will feature a cancer centre, 200 acute care beds, and a healthcare training facility in partnership with the Grande Prairie Regional College. The facility will be built on land donated by the college.

One of the first steps for the design will be to develop a strategy to ensure community input and participation through the life of the project. The planning and consultation process for the design will be led by Alberta Infrastructure in partnership with Alberta Health Services. The design work will begin in March 2011 with construction expected to begin by mid-2011.

The Grande Prairie regional healthcare centre was announced in July 2010 as part of Phase One of the three-year Health Capital Plan 2010-2013.
