The Concourse D, under the supervision of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP), will include energy-efficient and sustainable elements to limit carbon footprint.
The several green initiatives of the project includes recycling programmes during construction, use of renewable energy, and locally sourced and recycled building materials to reduce the environmental impact of the new facility.
A total of 192 solar panels measuring 450m2 will be erected on the roof of the building to get the dual benefit of generating 1.8% of the total power requirement of Concourse D and keeping the building cool by reflecting sunlight.
Improved insulation will regulate temperature within the concourse while thermal technology will absorb sunlight in the day and radiate it during night. The glass façade will also provide natural light to the building.
The volume of the building has been reduced and removes the requirement to cool larger public spaces while providing a fully functional facility.
The building will include onsite recycling to reduce waste in landfills and accessible areas to collect and store non-hazardous materials including paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastic and metal.
Recycled materials, specially, regionally harvested or manufactured materials will be used in the construction.
DAEP will source 10% of its building material from within 800km of Dubai International and 20% from recycled materials.
Additionally, 50% Forest Stewardship Councils-certified wood based materials and products will be used in the building.
The lighting system of the building includes daylight sensors and less heat-intensive lighting to reduce energy consumption of the building and to cut energy to cool Concourse D.
“For Dubai Airports, and our construction partner Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, designing environmentally friendly terminals is key to limiting our energy consumption and carbon footprint over time and fits in with our broader environmental policy. It also supports our industry’s target of carbon neutral growth by 2020,” said Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths.
Situated in the Al Garhoud district, Dubai International Airport is spread over an area of 8,640 acres.
As a major airline hub in the Middle East, the Dubai International Airport handled 57.7 million in passenger traffic in 2012, a 13.2% increase over 2011.
