Six opportunities for public art in the stadium, which will cost $515 million to build, has been announced by the Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program, which extracts 1.5% of county building construction costs for the purchase or commissioning of artworks.

According to the Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program, stadium authorities will provide opportunities for public art worth an estimated $5.5 million. The estimated price equals 1.5% of the building cost, while $2 million has been set aside for future maintenance of artwork and administration of the projects.

A panel of artists and experts will choose the finalists from a number of applications submitted by interested artists. The Art in Public Places Trust is a panel appointed to approve the artworks and related expenditure. The winning proposals will be selected and declared between December 2009 to February 2010.

The project also includes the integration of a home-run entertainment feature beyond the outfield wall for $2.5 million; illumination of four monumental columns supporting the stadium’s retractable roof for $1 million, and landscape and design of the four-acre entrance plaza for $1 million.

The stadium will also include a children’s recreation area amounting to $1.5 million, while artistic enhancements to a 27,000 square feet glass wall will cost $2 million, and a marker commemorating historical moments at the Orange Bowl worth $300,000 will be included.

The stadium is expected to open its public art spaces sometime in April 2012.
