Including 620,000 square feet of space, the new facility will be located on the Brigham and Women’s Hospital campus in the world-renowned Longwood Medical Area. Upon completion, the $280 million project will feature an 11-storey research lab and clinical facility, and a 460-car below-grade parking garage.
Encompassing lab and outpatient clinical space, advanced imaging facilities, and a conference centre, the state-of-the art building will bring clinicians and researchers together to foster translational medicine. A pedestrian bridge will be constructed to connect the Brigham Building for the Future to the existing Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center.
The innovative, hybrid up/up construction method will be utilised for the core and shell of the building, which will enable simultaneous construction of both the substructure and superstructure. Apart from that Target Value Design, Model-Based Estimating, and Lean Construction processes will also be used to enhance team-wide collaboration, minimisation of issues, and saving significant time on the overall schedule.
Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the building will feature a roof garden to reduce storm water runoff; a system that cleans and reuses storm water for mechanical equipment; and a co-generation plant to supply the building with electricity, steam, and hot water.
The construction work will be carried out by Suffolk Construction, and is scheduled to be completed in fall 2016.
