Designed by S&P architects in partnership with John McAslan, the Elephant and Castle Leisure Centre scheme will cost £18.5m ($28.28m).
The leisure centre will be built on a site, adjacent to the new, reconfigured southern roundabout next to the Tabernacle Church and St Mary’s churchyard.
It will include a six-lane 25m community swimming pool, a 12m learner pool, a four-court sports hall, a 140-station gym, two studios, a spinning room, wet and dry changing facilities, and sauna and steam room facilities.
Other supportive facilities such as crèche, café, and associated office space to manage the centre would also be provided.
The leisure centre will have a steel frame with concrete cores and basement.
The building will also be clad in a lightweight metal brass standing seam system and natural timber, reports shinesquad.
Designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, sustainability would be a major focus of the leisure scheme with features such as a combined heat and boiler plant, photovoltaic panels, and grey water recycling system.
Expected to open in 2015, the Elephant & Castle Leisure Centre scheme is being built to meet the demand for a high quality facility, which is accessible and affordable for everyone.
The Elephant and Castle development is a partnership between Southwark Council and its Local Education Partnership, 4:Futures, which includes Southwark Council, Balfour Beatty and Amber Structures, said shinesquad.
