Scope of work involves renovation and modernisation of the central portion of Terminal 1, which has been designed by Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee, a US-based architectural practice. The 18-month scheme will transform the 1980s-built terminal into a modern terminal, bathing in natural light. The renovated terminal will include new shops and restaurants; renovated ticketing and bag claim areas and a larger security checkpoint. .

The project will develop one concourse with nine gates. The concourse will feature large windows, which will allow panoramic views of the airfield and bring natural light into the inner space. The lighting will be controlled by means of sunscreens and roller shades. The project will expand the queueing area and add a second level security point with four lanes.

The project will also replace the existing blue exterior panels of the terminal and install four artworks to increase the aesthetic appeal of the terminal. The building will have metal panels, translucent fibreglass panels and translucent materials which will create an open, light filled interiors.

The terminal will be marked by a new canopy system, which will run the length of the terminal and transforms itself at the crosswalk linking the commercial curb canopy. The terminal will receive new signage, furnishing lighting and finishes. The building will also receive new stairs, escalators, and four new passenger elevators.

Construction on the facility will be undertaken by a joint venture of D.H. Griffin and Balfour Beatty Construction. The material palate to be used in renovation consists of glass, steel, metal panels, and translucent panels. Construction on the scheme is scheduled for completion in early 2014.
