First product to be unveiled is a new, wholly authentic reissue of the iconic 1950’s Coatrack design by Hungarian born designer Mathieu Matégot who was best known for the tapestries he designed in his later years. During his wartime captivity in Germany, Matégot discovered a way of rubbing perforated sheet metal to create a fine, pliable material called ritigulle that could be moulded like fabric. Throughout the1950’s, Matégot focused on producing a range of furniture and accessories, often combining ritigulle with other materials to create a series of practical, cost-efficient designs.

Matégot’s unique, functional and decorative design takes on an entirely new identity with its black lacquer finish and striking brass centerpiece. Matégot’s Coatrack was already reissued earlier in its multi-coloured form. It retails for £119 ($190.5).

Nagasaki Chair is still considered as Matégot’s best-known piece. This unusual, three-legged chair features saddle-like back and seat which symbolizes 1950s design. It is available in black/white, black/red, or black/yellow colours. Recommended retail price is £289 ($463.4).

Nagasaki Stool is Matégot’s pared back, complementary design to the Nagasaki chair. Available in black, red and yellow colours, the stool retails for £239 ($383.2).

Kangourou Table is a set of nesting coffee tables whose design reference Matégot’s early career as a set designer. When the tables are displayed together as one unit, light passes through, reflecting half-moon shadows onto the floor below. These tables are available in black/white, black/red, black/yellow, white/black, and white/yellow colours. Recommended retail price is £269 ($431.3).

Dedal Bookshelf has been designed as an individual and decorative wall feature that can be adapted to suit any space. Shelves can be used individually or grouped in multiple ways to form a functional piece. It is available in black, white, red, yellow and grey colours, and retails for £189 ($303).

The new collection will be displayed at GUBI’s Stand, S5 & S6, at designjunction, which will be held from 19-23 September 2012 in London. All the new pieces will be available to purchase online in late November from GUBI’s web-shop and from selected retailers across the UK.
