New Hope Housing’s 2424 Sakowitz community is named after the very street on which it resides. The 166-unit single room occupancy (SRO) apartment complex for adults living alone on limited incomes has been studded with energy-efficient and sustainable features. Sakowitz has been awarded ‘Platinum’ level LEED for Homes certification—the highest level of certification.
Green features that contributed to LEED points are: smart site location and design; sustainable landscaping with over 100 native tree plantings; water-conserving appliances and fixtures; water-conserving irrigation system including rain water tanks; water retention system; efficient energy use with Energy Star appliances; use of recycled materials; roofing, paving, and plantings that reduce Heat-Island Effect; HVAC system for effective heating/cooling distribution; and effective lighting and shading.
Designed by Val Glitsch, FAIA, LEED AP, each living unit is fully-furnished and includes a microwave and refrigerator, and a private, tiled bath. The ground floor of one building, located at the front of the property, includes community spaces featuring: reception area; fully-furnished community rooms; community kitchen; fully-equipped business centre; coin-operated washer/dryer facility; two laundry rooms; courtyard with a gazebo, water feature, and horseshoe pit; and two patio areas, one featuring flowers and one with barbeque grills for outdoor cooking.
This 166-unit SRO is New Hope Housing’s fifth apartment community and their second development financed partially with Housing Tax Credits. It is situated between the Fifth Ward, a largely African-American community, and the Hispanic Denver Harbor Addition.
New Hope Housing, Inc. was founded in 1993 as an independent non-profit organization to offer high-quality, durable, affordable efficiency apartment homes with supportive services to adults who live singly on low incomes.
