The $125 million facility is spread across 90,000 square feet and features space for exhibits, meetings, performances, dining and retail sales. The Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, consisting of more than 10,000 documents from the civil rights icon’s life, forms the centerpiece of the project, reports the Associated Press.
The Freelon Group also designed the Reginald F Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, and the Harvey B Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture in Charlotte, North Carolina, scheduled to open in the later half of the year.
Organizers of the center are planning to break ground on the museum late this year and plan to open the museum by 2011.
