Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool, UK is one of the largest children’s hospitals in Europe run by the Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
The GBP175 million ($286.6 million approx) PFI project will be designed to be a world-class facility and the UK’s first children’s health park. The new 43,000 square meter highly sustainable hospital facility will sit on Liverpool’s Springfield Park, next to the existing Victorian buildings.
Architects will work closely with a children’s committee. The committee will see to it that ideas submitted by 1,000 of the region’s children are incorporated. These include more privacy for patients, age-segregated wards, accommodation for parents and play areas.
The UK’s leading contractors are competing to build the new children’s health park, centered on a 450,000 square feet hospital and 1,200-space car park. Laing, Balfour Beatty, Bovis Lend Lease, Carillion and Taylor Woodrow have all expressed interest as soon as the bidding process for the private finance initiative went live. A bidder open day for the project will be held on February 11, 2010. Three or four potential bidders will be invited to compete for the contract.
Construction is expected to start in early 2010 with completion slated for October 2014, to coincide with Alder Hey’s 100th anniversary.
