The expansion to the vacant adjacent storefront is primarily being done to make the store more customer-friendly. The renovation has added space to the aisles making them wider, thus providing easy movement for those who are on wheel chairs. The bathrooms have also been upgraded into being more accessible to the handicapped. Hirschman said that the addition of space has also given the store a greater visual appeal, allowing the customers to view all that the store has to offer.
In April 1996, Martin and Hirschman who are licensed social workers, realized the need of the older and disabled adults for clothing and equipment, set up this store. Independent You, at 434 Springfield Pike, had been closed for renovations last summer and reopened in mid-November 2009.
